All the Same in the Atlantic

December 7, 2022

Newfoundland and Labrador have released their report and it's very similar to the proposal and current map. Newfoundland and Labrador has 7 seats with 72,935 people/electoral district although Labrador has special status to be smaller than an average electoral district. The riding only has 26,655 people meaning all other districts need to have roughly 81,000 people/Newfoundland district.

Proposal

The proposal didn't see much change in the west and centre of Newfoundland. Long Range Mountains was preserved and the Kittiwake Coast around New-Wes-Valley switched from Terra Nova-The Peninsulas (replaced Bonavista-Burin-Trinity) and was added to Notre Dame-Bay d'Espoir (replaced Coast of Bays-Central-Notre Dame).

To compensate for this population loss Terra Nova-The Peninsulas took almost the rest of the western Conception Bay coast from Avalon.

St. John only saw minor border changes but the renaming of St. John's South-Mount Pearl to Cape Spear.

Report

Like the other Atlantic provinces, the reports didn't show much change from the original proposals or even the current map. Newfoundland and Labrador is no exception. Notre Dame-Bay d'Espoir's name was changed to Central Newfoundland and the Kittiwake Coast change was reversed leaving western and central Newfoundland with nothing but very minor line shifts from the current borders.

Terra Nova-The Peninsulas got the rest of the Placentia Bay coast added to it while losing the section of Conception Bay they gained in the proposal.

In the St. John's metro, Cape Spear saw a massive shrink making it much more urban, with St. John's East staying pretty much the same.

Political Impact

The switch of the Kittiwake Coast depended on if Coast of Bays-Central-Notre Dame/Notre Dame-Bay d'Espoir/Central Newfoundland was going to go Conservative or Liberal. Luckily for the Conservative MP in the area, it was cut out in the report and it is likely he will be reelected. In the rest of the province, it is solidly Liberal with unlikely flips anywhere.
